It is impossible to calculate how many miles
of cloth Neil Colmer has made so far, but he has been a serious
weaver now for 32 years and plans to keep weaving for many years
to come. He has woven cloth from many fibers including cotton,
wool, linen and even Mylar threads, preferring the cotton for
it's wash ability. You can see his work in many countries of the
world because people from all over buy things in his shop and
take them home with them. He has a shawl in Katmandu and a baby
blanket in Moscow. Neil's favorite styles of weaving are the colonial
overshot patterns, Atwater Bronson Lace and double woven cloth.
Mary Elizabeth Colmer made her first cornshuck doll in 1971
in a one on one teaching session with Gerry Armstrong, who learned
to make them from May Ritchie/DesChamps of Viper, Kentucky, USA.
The style of doll Mary makes is called The Ritchie Family Traditional
Cornshuck Doll. These figures are characterized by several unique
wrapping techniques that are not used in other traditions. All
of Mary's dolls are signed, dated and numbered by hand, and as
of 9/15/2000 she has made 8347 cornshuck dolls in 29 years. She
has also written a book on how to make the dolls, entitled ....
"Oh Shucks".
